Sustainable New YorkIf Robert LaVala and Jill Slater have their way, New York will have a new market soon. The two are passionate about food and about developing a year around, indoor, public market in New York on the site of the old Fulton Fish Market. They hope the New Amsterdam Market will be home to purveyors of fish, cheese and meat, and that local farmers will sell their food there. Meanwhile, it pays to check out the Essex Street Market on the Lower East Side. There, purveyors like cheesemonger, Anne Saxelby , who’s devoted to promoting American farmstead cheeses, have opened stalls with high quality artisanal products. A little further afield (but not much), on Long Island, a new magazine devoted to all things sustainable has just launched its inaugural issue. Called Canvas, it covers the sustainable life on Long Island — from food to the environment. With its legendary suburban sprawl, Long Island could use a forum to discuss sustainability. For one, it has long had one of the highest breast cancer rates in the nation. Still, on the eastern end, thriving vinyards and family farms remain, keeping the Island from being paved over entirely with macadam. Maybe there’s some hope for the LI environment after all.
