My New Book—Ice Cream: A Global History

Munchies at Work

Serious Eats has a great piece on food at work. At the New York publishing office where I used to toil, my bosses were serious foodies, so we ate lots, and ate well. One of my co-workers maintained a special stash just for me of chocolate covered raisins from Sahadi’s in Brooklyn — dark chocolate enrobing very fresh raisins. Every time I was stressed, I’d amble into her office and ask for my “medicine.” She’d dole out a handful and it would cure all ills, especially looming deadlines.

My boss developed a hankering for my FiberRich crackers, high-fiber items that I kept in my desk to stave off hunger pangs and to serve as a bulwark against the cookies, cakes, brownies and other temptations by the mail station. At first, I couldn’t believe I was actually ingesting these crackers with the consistency of sawdust, but after awhile, they grew on me — and on my boss.

My boss was seriously addicted. Every few minutes, he would sidle up to my desk and beg for a FiberRich. Problem was, I would be reading my personal e-mail every time he came by for another fix. As a defensive move, I gave him his very own own box. Luckily, it wasn’t long before he ordered a carton full for himself.
