My New Book—Ice Cream: A Global History

NY Barbecue

OK, New York has decent, even very good, barbecue. Thank you New York Times for pointing this out. I haven’t eaten at all the places mentioned, but I do like Blue Smoke’s ribs and the mac and cheese is fabulous. With all this great ‘cue, why can’t anyone in New York brew a decent glas of iced tea, or “tea” as it’s simply referred to in the South? Maybe that’s the next step in the city’s southernization.

For a true ‘cue adventure (vicarious or for real), go to the Southern Foodways Alliance’s wonderful oral history, Barbecue Trail. Not only is this a great roadmap for those who want to embark on a southern ‘cue road trip, but the trail also contains deeply felt, authentic stories and personal histories of the families who make the ‘cue, many of which have been in the business for generations.

While you’re on the SFA site, also check out the Boudin Trail, Gumbo Trail, and Tamale Trail.
