My New Book—Ice Cream: A Global History

Upper West Side Restaurant: Kefi

I don’t get it. Both the New York Times and New York Magazine love Kefi, the reborn, Onera, which served delicious gourmet Greek food. Now Onera’s been reconstituted for the cheap eats crowd. That would be great if the food were any good, but it’s pretty undistinguished. Plus the place is mobbed and cramped. I’m not exactly a big person and I could barely squeeze into my seat, so jam-packed were the tables.

We ordered a bunch of appetizers. The starters were promising if not terribly exciting. The broth for the mussels, gigante beans, and feta was buttery with a nice tang; I sopped it up with some nice, crusty bread. Cuttlefish stuffed with spinach & manouri, yellow pea puree were also pleasing.

When we got to the main course, the disappointment really began. If it hadn’t been for the piquancy of the feta added to the baked shrimp, orzo, tomato, and feta, the dish would have been virtually tasteless, both the Hubby and I agreed.

Maybe it was a bad night but I’m not returning any time soon.
