North Fork, LI: Strawberry Time

I know. There are lots of places that claim to be prime strawberry territory. There’s California and there’s the Hudson Valley. New York’s Greenmarket is overflowing with berry vendors, and they’re fine if you’re stuck in the city.

But trust me, you’ll find no better berries than on Long Island’s North Fork. Next week is the local strawberry festival, but I’m already having my own private celebration! Last week, I went to Latham’s in Oysterpond. The farm stand was brimming with luscious, perfect, ruby-red (yes, I’m going on a bit) orbs of sweet deliciousness. Some folks are partial to the ones at Wickham’s in Cutchogue; I find that they’ve been picked a bit too soon.

My very favorite berry growing farm stand is perched by the side of the road at Harbes Berry Farm in Mattituck. Patty Harbes Divello has been raising the fruit since she was a kid and she knows her stuff! Stop by the stand all summer for the freshest strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries.
