Czech Republic: Beer, Glorious Beer

Apart from the fairy tale villages and beautiful countryside, one of the best things about the Czech Republic is the tasty beer. Pilsner dominates and almost every region has its own brew.

A fun thing to do is to tour the Budweiser Budvar Brewery in Ceske Budejovice. Yes, this brew shares a name with the American beer icon (the two Budweisers have been battling over the rights to the iconic label in court for years), but the taste of the Czech beer is richer and more flavorful. And Czechs may be the beer masters of the universe. Apparently, every man, woman and child in the country consumes roughly 400 bottles per year.

At the brewery, you can taste “mother beer,” which is unpasteurized and unfiltered, tour the beer making facilities and view the plant where bottles are filled with brew in a dizzying football-field sized assembly line of whirring glass, beer, and machines.
