Upper West Side: 97th Street GreenmarketThe Greenmarket on 97th between Amsterdam and Columbus is rockin‘. Lots of folks shopping there this morning, right in the shadow of the construction site that caved in and sent the poor folks of Park West Village scurrying out of their apartments the other day. Soon, 30-story luxury buildings and a Whole Foods will be springing up; how the ‘hood is changing and I’m not at all sure for the better. But back to the Greenmarket. I got fabulous, glistening scallops from the Hampton Bays Fish guy who, as an aside, volunteered that husbands (I guess he’s one) need lots of attention. So, I got the fish and some marital advice thrown into the bargain…. Next, at the end of the line of 10 or so stalls, I purchased doughnut peaches, regular peaches and tiny plums, sweet as candy, from Locust Grove Farm, which is located in the Ulster County town of Milton-on-Hudson. Biala Farms, from New Hampton, had gorgeous, ruby red radishes and Diners Farms, from Oak Hill in the Catskills was purveying the most beautiful, sinuous oyster mushrooms I’ve ever seen. Bradley Farm was featuring gorgeous heirloom tomatoes. If you’re a tomato fan, the farm is sponsoring Ray’s Heirloom Tomato Festival on Sunday Aug. 26 from 12 to 6pm. For information, email them at heirloomtomato9@aol.com I think it’s great that this Greenmarket accepts food stamps. But I’m not sure a low-income shopper would spring for a small $5.00 container of diPaola’s chopped turkey or two cartons of fresh blueberries for $7.00. Greenmarket
