New York Restaurant: Grill 44As I was escaping the city for the Labor Day weekend, I was sprinting for the Hampton Jitney which takes me out to the North Fork. I didn’t have much time to spare so I ran into a pita joint called Grill 44 on the southwest corner of 44th and Third. The sign said Mediterranean food and the awning sported vibrant dancing flames. I ordered some humus and peasant salad (cucumbers and tomatoes) and bolted for the bus. Yum! The shepherd salad was fresh and the humus was deeply nutty. It tasted like it had just been whipped up in the tiny kitchen behind the counter. Next time I’m in the ‘hood, I’m going back. Except this time, I’ll try some of the grilled items. Those flames dancing on the awning can’t be lying. 160 E 44th St
