North Fork, LI: Fisky Oyster in Greenport

In the face-off between the Fifth Season and Frisky Oyster, upscale eateries down the block from each other on Front Street in Greenport, Fifth Season to my mind provides the superior dining experience.

My hubby has been lobbying to try the Frisky Oyster, so last night we went to the dining spot–hopping with locals and tourists on this August Sunday evening–for dinner. The dining room is pleasant enough, though the tables for two are set very close together, and the persistent thump, thump, thump of the hard driving music track in the background altered the mood a bit from relaxed and summery to intense and urban.

The stand-out dish for us was my hubby’s scallops, wrapped in prosciutto with a sauce consisting of gazpacho-type ingredients, including cilantro, tomatoes, and garlic. Redolent of cilantro, and perfectly cooked, the scallops were a hit.

Not so some of the other items, starting with the undistinguished hunk of white bread, unceremoniously dumped on the table. Chatting with the couple at the next table, we all wondered: “What’s the matter? They can’t supply a plate or a bread board?”

My crispy zucchini blossoms with crab, roasted corn, and goat cheese were expertly fried in a tempura batter, but the filling was under-seasoned and except for an assertive tang of goat cheese, quite bland.

Then I ordered seared pork loin. I have to confess that after eating David Chang’s pork creations at Momofuko Ssam Bar in New York, I’m spoiled forever when it comes to fantastic porcine creations. After a caution from the our waiter that medium, as opposed to well-done, was the only way to go, the dish still turned out to be way too dry. The roasted peach was tough , which was weird considering ripe peaches abound right now on the North Fork, so there’s no excuse for serving one that’s anything less than soft and yielding.

For dessert, we split an order of chocolate souffle cake, chocolately and light, a nice finish to the meal.
