North Fork, LI: Lobster Roll Restaurant, 5th Season, Erik’sOut my window, the Peconic is like blue silk that’s been slightly rumpled. I can see the tip of the South Fork in the distance. Saturday night, we went to a party in the Hamptons. I had to put on my fancy, city clothes for the event. Normally, I’m in a bathing suit or ratty jeans. Dress up on the North Fork is a pair of khakis. Still, it’s nice to get dolled up once in awhile and the party was fun, though all the very skinny women made me feel like I ought to go on a diet. Rumor has it that Hamptons folks are scouting out houses on the North Fork. Oh no. There goes the laid back vibe and the the relatively traffic-free roads. On Friday, I stopped for lunch at the Lobster Roll Restaurant, Northside in Riverhead, the North Fork branchy of a Hamptons eatery. A better lobster roll (actually I had my lobster in a yummy beefsteak tomato) can’t be found south of Maine. Huge chunks of meat dressed in a light coating of mayo. I ate every bit which is why I’ll never be a skinny Hamptons babe. Another good spot for lunch is Erik’s on the North Road in Southold. A few weeks ago, I devoured a terrific sandwich consisting of portobello mushroom, fresh tomato and goat cheese. Today they were featuring local tomatoes and mozzarella. Saturday, on the way back from the Hamptons, through Shelter Island, we tried to stop at a couple of places but everything was jammed. When we got to Greenport, we settled into our favorite restaurant, Fifth Season, which more or less relies on local ingredients for its dishes. The frito misto we ordered was simply the best I’ve had outside Italy, impeccably fried in a way that insured that the seafood and veggies were crisp and didn’t get ruined by that slick of grease that one often finds marring the dish.
