My New Book—Ice Cream: A Global History

It was a gorgeous late-summer day yesterday and I was prowling around the West Village, which is where I’d live if I wasn’t so attached to the Upper West Side’s parks. I love how it’s low-rise and very green and there are so many cute spots to eat.

I got the munchies and decided to stop at Smorgas, which serves Scandinavia specialties. They have a great lunch special for $12.95–soup or salad, a sandwich and potatoes (fried or potato salad) on the side. The service is a little slipshod, but who cares when you can sit at the sidewalk cafe and can watch the scene go by. Across the street, an artist had set up his easel and hyper-attractive couples were strolling down the street.

Now the food. Very good and I’d say I’d go back for brunch any time. The soft scrambled eggs on my salmon and egg sandwich were perfectly cooked. The salmon was fine and there were enough greens to satisfy a rabbit.

All in all, the entire experience was very pleasant. There are also locations in midtown and the financial district.
