North Fork, LI: Best French ToastI’m not a big one for eating breakfast out nor am I a fan of getting all dolled up to eat brunch at some restaurant. I prefer to wake up slowly in my own kitchen with my bowl of cereal and cup of tea. Having to face the world first thing in the morning is just not my style. But this past Sunday, the cupboard was bare so we all trekked over to the Hellenic Snack Bar in East Marion. Word on the street (actually from our friend Paula) was that the babka French toast was to die for. Now, I’ve heard of challah French toast, but babka French toast was a new one on me. At first the waitress said, “Sorry, we’re done with breakfast,” when we ambled in around 11:30 a.m. But then I adopted my best stricken look and asked if she could, pretty please, make an exception and cook us up a batch of this mythic breakfast food. So she prevailed on the cook and I must say this was first-rate French toast. In fact, maybe the best I’ve ever eaten: buttery, crispy on the outside, and moist on the inside. You could taste the cheese babka shining through but you could also taste the egg. Thanks to the waitress. We’ll be back for more. Hellenic Snack Bar
