East Village Restaurant: The Monkey

If you’re looking for Thai food with a bit of a French twist, The Elephant is a good choice. We went there the other night with friends and its relatively inexpensive but toothsome dishes satisfied.

I wasn’t in the mood for anything new or special, so I ordered Pad Thai. It was perfectly fine, with shrimp that weren’t overcooked as is often the case. My hubby enjoyed his duck entree of slices of duck over noodles. The bird was flavorful but pretty fatty. A friend dug into her steak salad topped with well-flavored meat with just the right amount of spicy kick

For dessert, all of us took tastes of my hubby’s lemon grass, lime tart. The verdict? Lemon grass is not a great ingredient in most desserts; it imparts a disconcerting off-taste. The passion fruit sorbet, which some of us ordered, was a refreshing close to the meal.
