Trader Joe’s Opens in Queens

At long last, Trader Joe’s has flung open its doors at its new Rego Park locale.

We hear from one Forest Hills resident who’s been closely following the progress of the store, that on Saturday, the day after the formal opening, the place was, not surprisingly, “a madhouse.”

There were lots of “grazers,” he said. These seemed to be folks who are new to the Trader Joe’s experience. They were busy checking the place out, he reported.

Checkout management in the Queens store is patterned after the traditional grocery store model where everyone jockeys for position to find the shortest line. In the Trader Joe’s in the city on 14th Street, shoppers form one line and a traffic cop directs each one to the shortest queue. Apparently, at the Queens store, scrambling for checkout advantage is the order of the day.

As for parking, you could head over to the nearby Sports Authority lot instead of playing roller derby with other desperate parkers in the small area that Trader Joe’s shares with a Michael’s and a Staples.
