Vermont: Grafton Village Cheese CompanyWe schlepped to the Grafton Cheese Shop after calling a half dozen small cheese makers in southern Vermont and finding no one at home. The farmers are out milking the sheep/cows/goats and don’t have time for us city slickers. Can’t blame them much. So off we went to the picture postcard perfect town of Grafton, which is lined with white clapboard houses and looks like a Currier and Ives print. The real purpose of the visit was to stop by the Grafton Village Cheese Company, which makes a fine cheddar. But, a word to the wise. Unless you want a peak at the cute village, it’s not worth the trip. First of all, you can pick up the cheese at almost any food store in Southern Vermont. Second, the Grafton Cheese shop is a total madhouse, especially on a nice fall weekend. People were pawing and pummeling each other just to get to the samples; the whole thing was very unpleasant and un-Vermont-like. Now for the cheese. This is first class cheddar, especially the four-year aged variety. While we were watching the Yankees lose to the Indians this week (sob! sob!), we devoured a huge chunk, along with some of the apples we had bought at Green Mountain Orchards in nearby Putney. A perfect autumn snack. Grafton Village Cheese Company
