West Village Restaruant: Fabulous Fatty Crab

Friends have been telling me for months to visit the Fatty Crab. Let me say upfront: this Hudson Street eatery is first rate and I’ll be back soon.

Why such a rave? Well, it’s the inventive Malaysian food. It’s certainly isn’t the décor which boasts bordello-red walls. We got to the place early, around 6:15, because we were going to theater afterwards. There was lots of casual banter among the servers that made the scene a tad informal for my taste. On the other hand, our waiter was incredibly helpful when we asked questions about each of the small plates, and he made some great recommendations.

But speaking of taste, this place knows how eek out every molecule of flavor from a dish. We started with green mango slices that we dipped in chili-sugar-salt. The crunch of the mango and the sweet/spice of salt mixture left our plates tingling but happy. Next up were steamed veggie buns that were so luscious and rich I could have sworn they were the pork variety. Skate Panggang possessed a slight crunch which nicely offset the perfectly cooked fish. Fatty duck was my least favorite dish. It most resembled short ribs, but while it was flavorful it couldn’t compete with the other items we sampled. The kang kong, we ordered as a side dish turned out to be a spectacularly delicious bowl of greens.

I washed the whole thing down with a fruity, light bottle of Hitachino white ale. If there was a disappointing note, it was only that there are no desserts on the menu. Some fruit or sorbet would have been a perfect finish.
