Since I’m allergic to the protein in cow’s milk, I either avoid dairy or go ahead and indulge and suffer the consequences. Once in awhile, I crave a slice of pizza but don’t want to tempt the fates by consuming cow’s milk mozzarella. Even buffalo milk-based cheese doesn’t work for me.
If you’re looking for a place to kill an hour in Penn Station, you could do a lot worse than Tracks. It’s pretty well hidden—literally, it’s on the Long Island Railroad level, tucked into one of those long, faceless corridors that’s marked by grim-faced commuters rushing to catch their trains.
Silly me. I continue to hold out hope—dashed again last night, this time at the Mermaid Inn’s new Upper West Side outpost—that the neighborhood will start to attract more high-quality dining establishments. Yes, there are a few very good restaurants, but a fresh infusion of culinary talent would be welcome.
Are coffeehouses with quality food and drink on the upswing? Maybe, says New York Magazine’s Underground Gourmet, who enthuses over a new java place in the East Village, called Abraço. It’s got great coffee and hand-crafted sandwiches and pastries, sourced, naturally, from seasonal ingredients.
When you’re getting together with old high school friends for dinner, you want a place where the food is satisfying but where the dining experience doesn’t compete with all that reminiscing.
