Garden City, LI: Seventh Street Café Satisfies with No-Frills ItalianWhen you’re getting together with old high school friends for dinner, you want a place where the food is satisfying but where the dining experience doesn’t compete with all that reminiscing. That’s the Seventh Street Café in Garden City, Long Island. Tucked away on side street in the affluent community’s shopping district, the eatery was hopping on a Friday night. Surprisingly, for such a bustling place, the noise level was tame enough so that we could carry on conversations easily. With 15 or so of us to serve, the waitress, who could have easily become flummoxed, handled the situation with grace, and the food arrived quickly. A three-course prix-fixe was the way to go. Entrees included moist flavorful salmon and buttery potatoes au gratin. Eggplant parmesan was also featured; if you’re someone who prefers the eggplant to be a grace note to the mozzarella, then this is the dish for you. Without a doubt, the Seventh Street Cafe is a great place for a convivial evening with old friends – and for the kind of flavorful, robust Italian that many Long Islanders grew up on. With wine, expect a tab of around $40 per person. Seventh Street Cafe
