West Village: Market Table for Top-Notch Comfort FoodOn a night more fit for polar bears than people, we settled into Market Table for some reasonably priced and excellent grub. The place is all exposed brick and features a market near the entrance with foods from some of the dishes on the menu. And it’s immediately obvious when you first walk into the place that comfort food—and a comfortable ambiance—are priorities. The service is relaxed and informal, but attentive. It feels warm and snug, just like the food. For starters, I had the special for the night, a sumptuous escarole soup, with interesting textures and flavors to spare. Pumpernickel croutons and crispy chunks of duck added a nice crunch as well as some saltiness, while the squash that was part of the mix imparted some sweetness. Another starter, scallops wrapped in bacon, was pleasant, but the fish itself was rubbery from too much time in the pan. Main courses were first rate. I tucked into lamb shanks which were so tender the meat fell off the bone. My hubby loved his strip steak and with good reason—it was juicy and perfectly cooked. By the time we were done with all this, there was no room for dessert, but we’ll be back so we’ll try those next time. Entrees run from $18-$29. Market Table
