Gramercy: Penelope for Comfort Food
Looking for the ultimate grilled cheese sandwich? Or maybe a veggie burger that’s almost as flavorful as the meat variety? Then Penelope might be your spot for a casual, comfort food lunch.
The modest eatery, astride 30th and Lex, features diner food, but with a definite upmarket twist. The grilled cheese sandwich was a masterpiece of ooziness, a perfect melding of Swiss, Fontina, and American on sourdough. “Veggie Burger Heaven” was aptly named. Usually, I avoid ordering veggie burgers because the patties are almost always dry and flavorless. Not Penelope’s, which is served on a toasted English muffin with pesto mayo, sliced red onion, greens and tomato.
Penelope also serves breakfast. The menu includes the usual selection of eggs, pancakes, and waffles.
Prices are higher than at your local diner or coffee shop, but the food’s better. Grilled cheese was $7.95. A grilled chicken club is $9.75 and Mac and Cheese is $9.50.
