Upper West Side: Happy Birthday Barney Greengrass

With family-owned food stores in Manhattan fading fast, it’s good to celebrate the 100th birthday of Barney Greengrass, the smoked fish emporium. If you go there today, you can get lox and stuff at 1908 prices. A side of Nova is a mere $1.40; normally it’s $10. What a bargain!

The fact that the place boasts 50-year old wallpaper and grumpy waiters is a turn-on to some. For me, it makes for a totally unpleasant dining experience. Yes, the lox is great. But I’d rather get it to go and eat it in pleasant surroundings, like my own kitchen.

Here’s a story on the store’s centennial in todays’ New York Sun.
