Upper West Side, West Village: Grom Gets Good, Not Great Grades

Since New York Magazine has anointed the Italian gelato maker, Grom, the city’s best, I had to go see what all the fuss was about. Problem: I’m allergic to the protein in milk. So I ordered the melon sorbet, which was sensational. My hubby chose the extra-noir chocolate, which was a bit weird.

I was faint with pleasure after eating the melon sorbet. It was rich, luscious, and fruity and studded with chunks of melon. I could have eaten an entire tub of the stuff.

I only sampled a couple of spoonfuls of the chocolate, but it struck some off notes. The Grom web site says its chocolate offers sensations of “moderate acidity.” For me, there was a chalky, harsh taste that lingered for several minutes. I felt like I needed a breath mint to get rid of it.

Still, I’ll go back for the fruit sorbets. I expect the other flavors offered–which in June include lemon and raspberry–are at least as ambrosial as the divine melon.
