White Post, VA: Mr. B’s BBQYes, I know, NYC is getting better at turning out reasonably tasty BBQ. But you have to go south of the Mason Dixon Line to get the real stuff. Now Virginia isn’t North Carolina. But, Mr B’s BBQ and Catering , a couple of hours south of DC in the Shenandoah Valley town of White Post, serves up fabulous Q. The first day we hit Mr. B’s, a squat white cinder block box with a smoker out back, we ordered the ribs, the pulled pork sandwich, and some BBQ chicken. Outside are a few picnic tables where you can spread out your order. Let’s skip the chicken and go right to the pig. Though the ribs were luscious and succulent, the pulled pork sandwich was impossibly rich and delicious. I topped mine with the some excellent cole slaw. I was sighing with every ambrosial bite. When we ordered our Q, we spotted a sign offering up homemade sweet potato pie. Who can resist that? So, I marched back in and asked the burly guy behind the counter if I could have a slice. “No,” he said, “you have to order the whole pie.” So for $7, we feasted on the most impossibly rich, dense sweet potato pie anywhere, more like a flaky crust filled with squash ganache than your usual semi-gelatinous filling. The next day, we went back for more. My hubby downed a half rack of ribs, licking the hearty and nicely spiced BBQ sauce off his fingers. I elected a pulled chicken sandwich. Improbably, this dish was almost as satisfying as the pulled pork of the day before, so if you want to give your arteries a break, don’t feel that you’re cheating yourself by ordering the chicken instead. At the end of Meal 2–we were in finger licken’ heaven– I asked the guy behind the counter if he’d give me the recipe for the sweet potato pie. No Ma’am! “Why would I give that to you?” he replied, looking at me as if I was seriously out of my mind for even thinking of asking. Which I guess I was. But I pine for that pie! White Post is more west of DC than south.
Thanks so much! You’re right. White Post is west of D.C. Let me know how you like Mr. B’s.
Best BBQ in Virginia! White Post is about 45-minutes north of us, but man is it worth the drive.
I love the vibe there, too. Really just a bunch of surly guys smoking the #@*% out of some pork and chicken.
