Midtown: Our Place Shanghai Tea Garden

You would think you’d get the food you deserve in a midtown Chinese restaurant with chow mein on the menu. And if you stopped with the steamed vegetable dumplings you’d be right to give a hearty thumbs down to Our Place Shanghai Tea Garden. The dumplings were chewy and doughy, like rubber bands, with about as much taste.

But things improved after that. The chicken with abalone mushrooms, which were huge floppy affairs, was tender and flavorful. So was the shredded pork with garlic sauce.

At dinner time, we were about the only people in the restaurant. Shanghai Tea Garden appears to be mostly a lunch place for office workers in the area. Most entrees are under $20.
