Rosh Hashanah Recipe

If you’re a Sephardic Jew, you get to eat relatively healthy holiday fare on Rosh Hashanah. If you’re Ashkenazi, you have bloat and acid reflux to look forward to following your New Year’s meal.

But tradition is tradition. And if you want to include some elements that your Grandma might recognize, here’s a recipe for tzimmes from Zabar’s. (This image of the dish comes from JeiwshFoods.org, a great repository of Jewish recipes.)

In case you’re not familiar with tzimmes, it’s a kind of stew made with carrots and sweet potatoes. It’s best prepared with meat (flanken, otherwise known as short ribs, is standard) but vegetarians can just leave the beef out.

It’s delicious. But be warned. A light diet dish, it’s not!
