With ThanksgivingKah (aka the convergence of Hanukkah and Christmas) is almost upon us. What better way to celebrate than with an ice cream cake? I don’t know if Carvel still makes these—there’s one for Christmas, too—but I love this 1982 ad from the company.
When Desserts in Jars: 50 Sweet Treats that Shine by blogger Shaina Olmanson landed in my mailbox, my first reaction, quite frankly, was to roll my eyes. Come on. Can’t we make really good desserts without relying on gimmicks like cakes on sticks and pies in jars?
But after sitting down with this new cookbook, I’m pretty much wowed. Published by the highly regarded Harvard Common Press, Desserts in Jars boasts gorgeous photos, and clearly written text. The recipes for cupcakes, frozen treat, pies and the like are straightforward and easy to follow. Read more on Huffington Post.

One of the great desserts of all times, Teddie’s Apple Cake is perfect for the High Holidays, and especially for Rosh Hashanah. In fact, you’ll love this cake even if you’re not Jewish. It’s moist and filled with nuts, apples and raisins. Perfect with a cup of tea or for Sunday brunch.
Click here for the the recipe, which first apeared in the New York Times in 1973. If you don’t like things too sweet, cut the sugar to 1 cup. The raisins and apples add a dose of natural sweeteners so two cups of sugar is overkill.
