Update: Nov. 25, 2009: Trader Joe’s says they will open a store at 72nd Street and Broadway in 2010. Fairway’s Steve Jenkins comments on TJ’s planned opening.
Update, Sept. 4, 2009: Trader Joe’s confirmed in an e-mail to the West Side Indepdent that the eagerly awaited TJs at the corner of Broadway and 72nd Street will not be opening in the new tower under construction on the heavily-trafficked corner.
Here’s the original story:
For months, Upper West Siders have been awaiting the arrival of a Trader Joe’s grocery store. The discount supermarket was reported to be going into the new building being erected on the southwest corner of 72nd St. and Broadway.
Now, it appears that the store may not open on the Upper West Side at all.
Said Tony, the store manager for TJ’s Union Square location: “There’s nothing confirmed about any other” store locations being added in Manhattan to supplement the existing 14th Street Trader Joe’s.
Asked about rumors that Trader Joe’s was actually going to set up shop on 100th Street near the river and not at the 72nd Street locale, Tony, who declined to provide his last name, said: “None of that is accurate. Nothing has been decided.”
The only way for neighborhood residents to learn about a new TJ’s is to actually witness the store build-out taking place. “We are always working with realtors in the area,” but future customers will remain in the dark about store openings “until we are doing our own construction” inside a building, he said.
